Werder Bremen has started the 2026 transfer window much better than last year. Several players like Chuki, Kenny Quetant and Darwin Soylu have already been signed. However, the work is not yet done. Sport director Peter Niemeyer provides insights into the remaining plans.

Which positions still need to be filled?

Niemeyer confirms that Werder is still active in the market. A new striker, a defensive midfielder and a full-back are on the wish list. The Bremen-based club has four more weeks to complete the squad.

Why is the transfer market stalling?

Currently, Werder is in a waiting phase. Important departures like Karim Coulibaly or Jens Stage do not seem to be happening. Without income from sales, it will be difficult to make expensive signings.

What is the current situation?

Despite the challenges, the plan remains to complete the squad by the DFB Cup opener on August 22. Young defender Mick Schmetgens has impressed in pre-season. The Bremen-based club is planning with the scenario of Coulibaly staying.

League standing (final 2025 table -- new season not yet under way): 15th in Bundesliga, 28 pts, 7W-7D-15L from 29 games, recent form LLWLW.
