Werder Bremen plan defensive midfield transfer

After Senne Lynen’s (27) abdominal injury, Werder Bremen are looking for a solution in defensive midfield. Director of Professional Football Peter Niemeyer confirmed to ‚Bild‘ that the club is keeping an eye on the market: “Lynen’s injury hurts. But young players like Dariusz, Patrice, Mats, and Chuki are doing well in the center. Still, we’re keeping our eyes open on the transfer market for this position.”

Who is missing in the defensive midfield role?

Besides Lynen, new signing Dariusz Stalmach (20) is also unavailable. According to FT, Bremen have targeted Batista Mendy (26/Trabzonspor) as a result. Despite the shortage in the defensive midfield, the club is still looking for a buyer for Skelly Alvero (24), as confirmed by Niemeyer.

Why is this position so crucial?

Werder Bremen finished last season in 15th place in the Bundesliga with 32 points (8W-8D-18L). Defensive stability was an issue: 60 goals conceded and a goal difference of -23. The last three matches all ended in defeats (LLL), most recently 0-2 against Borussia Dortmund on May 16, 2026.

What’s next?

With Keke Topp still sidelined, a new defensive midfielder could strengthen the defense. Niemeyer emphasized that while the club is satisfied with the young players, they would seize the opportunity if it arises. The search for reinforcements remains active.
