Werder Bremen has started its second training camp of the season without Romano Schmid, who is on the verge of a transfer to Serie A newcomer Frosinone. The 26-year-old midfielder could be sold for over eight million euros. The club is still looking for reinforcements after finishing 15th last season (32 points, 8W-8D-18L).
What happened to Schmid?
Romano Schmid is missing from the training camp as he is in talks with another club. The midfielder is reportedly close to joining Frosinone, which could bring Werder more than eight million euros. Defender Karim Coulibaly (19) might also be sold.
What reinforcements does Werder plan?
Football managing director Clemens Fritz is under pressure as the squad still needs improvements. The team is looking for a right full-back, a central midfielder, and a forward. The preseason friendlies have gone well so far, including a 2-2 draw against Paderborn.
Who is missing from the training camp?
Coach Daniel Thioune will be without Niklas Stark (thigh issues), Keke Topp (rehab), and Felix Agu (calf injury). Chuki, Dawid Kownacki, Salim Musah, and Skelly Alvero will join later. The camp is taking place at the Sporthotel Klosterpforte, where the Portuguese national team once trained.
What’s next for Werder?
After the cup match against Lüneburg on August 22, Werder will face Freiburg away on August 30. The team lost its last five games (0W-0D-5L) and needs to improve after scoring only 37 goals and conceding 60 last season.
