Niclas Füllkrug scored for Werder Bremen in a 1-1 draw against 1. FC Köln. The striker equalised in the 69th minute from a corner after Jahmai Simpson-Posey failed to clear a header from Amos Pieper, allowing Füllkrug to pounce on the rebound.
Linton Maina had put Köln ahead in the 11th minute, finishing a pass from Ellyes Skhiri. Earlier, Thijs Dallinga had a shot blocked by Youri Regeers hand in the box, leading referee Florian Exner to award a penalty to Köln, which Karl Hein saved.
Werder Bremen secured their first away point of the season and sit 11th in the Bundesliga with three points from two games. Their last five results read DWLWL: two wins, one draw, two defeats.
Daniel Thioune praised his team’s resilience after the match: „We fought back and showed our character“, said the Werder coach. Karl Hein highlighted the importance of his penalty save: „Moments like that can change a game“, the goalkeeper stated.
Mitchell Weiser marked his return after a 14-month injury layoff, coming on for Amos Pieper in the 83rd minute. The full-back had previously suffered an ACL and meniscus tear.
Amos Pieper was involved in Köln’s opening goal after his misplaced pass was intercepted by Tom Krauß and played to Linton Maina via Ellyes Skhiri.
Eren Dinkci had a dangerous free-kick in the 19th minute and a volley that hit the crossbar in the 58th, but did not score.
Saïd El Mala was introduced for Köln in the 74th minute after recovering from illness prior to the match.
