Mitchell Weiser is on the verge of returning to Werder Bremen's starting lineup after a 14-month injury absence. Manager Daniel Thioune confirmed the 32-year-old winger is back in contention following a full training session.
"He completed the full training session today. I assume he will be a starting candidate again straight away," said Thioune. The coach also referenced the long layoff. "We must not forget that he was not available to us for 14 months."
The next opportunity for a start comes on Saturday at home against 15th-placed SC Paderborn 07. Thioune had named an unchanged starting eleven for the last four matches, but that could now change. Alongside Weiser, Amos Pieper is also back in full training following a hip injury and is available. Werder Bremen currently sit seventh in the Bundesliga with eight points from five games.
For the 100th anniversary match against Paderborn, Senne Lynen is missing with back problems. Justin Njinmah may not return until the away game at Stuttgart on 7 November, while Moussa Ndiaye remains out with a thigh issue.
Weiser made his comeback in September 2025 in a 1-1 draw against Köln and recently contributed to the 3-2 win over Augsburg in stoppage time and the 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund. In that clash on 9 October, Niclas Füllkrug scored the equaliser in the 90th minute. The striker is currently the team's top scorer this season with four goals in five appearances.
The next home game against Paderborn kicks off on Saturday at 15:30. The reverse fixture on 8 August ended in a 2-2 draw.
