Werder Bremen has extended its partnership with main sponsor Matthäi three years early until 2032. The Bundesliga club announced the premature contract extension this week, as first reported by the specialist portal Kicker.

The original agreement between the club and the construction company was not due to expire until 2029. Both sides had already agreed on an initial extension until that date in the summer of 2024. The new decision to stretch the deal to 2032 highlights the stability of the relationship. Klaus Filbry, Chairman of the Board at Werder Bremen, called the move a "great sign of trust".

How has the partnership developed?

The cooperation between Werder Bremen and Matthäi began in 2019. Since then, the company with over 3500 employees at more than 75 locations in Northern Germany has been visible on the professionals' kits and around the Weserstadion. Klaus Filbry stated: "Mit Matthäi verbindet uns mittlerweile eine mehrjährige, sehr enge Partnerschaft, die in den vergangenen Jahren kontinuierlich gewachsen ist." For the club, the long-term planning security also means financial stability during a challenging phase of the season.

Currently, Werder sits in 15th place in the Bundesliga table after the first matchday. Coach Ole Werner's team has zero points from one game, meaning no wins and no draws, and their recent form is marked by a loss. The goal difference stands at 1:4, which is minus three. In the early standings, the Green-Whites are already three points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

What does the extension mean for Werder?

The early contract extension is an important building block for the club's medium-term planning. Sponsorship revenue is a central pillar in the budget of a Bundesliga club. The security of having a reliable main partner like Matthäi at their side makes other strategic decisions easier. Katarina Beves, a member of the board at Matthäi, emphasized the grown connection: "Wir sind stolz, mit Werder Bremen nicht nur unsere Marke sichtbar zu machen, sondern vor allem ein starkes Miteinander über viele Themen- und Verantwortungsbereiche hinweg etabliert zu haben."

The partnership goes beyond mere advertising space and includes joint projects in sustainability and social initiatives. This approach fits the value system of both partners, who are rooted in the northern German region. What's next for Werder on the pitch?

The current table situation demands a quick sporting response. The next opportunity comes this Saturday, September 5, 2026. Werder Bremen will then host RB Leipzig at their home Wohninvest Weserstadion. Leipzig started with a win and occupy third place before the matchday. It will be a demanding duel to kick off a run of games you can track on our fixtures page.

The early contract extension with Matthäi until 2032 now gives the club the necessary tailwind to focus fully on these sporting challenges. The long-term partnership is thus one of the most stable elements surrounding the club, while on the pitch the fight for points and positions begins anew.
