Werder Bremen begins preseason with cautious optimism
After narrowly avoiding relegation from the Bundesliga, Werder Bremen starts preseason with mixed emotions. Sporting director Clemens Fritz emphasized that the past season was painful for everyone involved. 'We certainly expected something different,' said Fritz. With 32 points and a 15th-place finish (8 wins, 8 draws, 18 losses) in the last campaign, the task ahead remains significant. The summer break was used to analyze past mistakes and look ahead.
Who are the new signings?
Compared to last season, Werder has made more progress in squad planning. Four new signings already participated in the first training session under coach Daniel Thioune: Oskar Wojcik (KS Cracovia), Chuki (Real Valladolid), Dariusz Stalmach (1. FC Magdeburg), and Kenny Quetant (AC Le Havre). Additionally, Austrian national goalkeeper Alexander Schlager (RB Salzburg) was signed, who will compete with Karl Hein (FC Arsenal) for the number one spot. Swiss striker Cedric Itten (Fortuna Düsseldorf) is also confirmed as a new arrival.
When are the first friendly matches?
The preseason schedule is packed with intense preparations. The first friendly match is this coming Saturday (3:00 PM) against Oberliga side FC Verden 04. This is followed by a training camp in Zell im Ziller, where the team will stay until July 26 and play against Fagiano Okayama (July 22) and VfL Bochum (July 25). Further friendlies are scheduled against Energie Cottbus (August 1) and SC Paderborn (August 8). The season opener at the Weserstadion against French Ligue 1 side AJ Auxerre is set for August 15. The first competitive match is on August 22 in the DFB Cup against Lüneburger SK.
What does Fritz say about potential departures?
Clemens Fritz confirmed that further changes to the squad are possible. 'We are always dependent on transfer income,' said the Werder manager. There have been inquiries, particularly for striker Justin Njinmah and midfielder Jens Stage. Further developments depend on whether more players leave the club. 'We have to wait and see how the market develops,' said Fritz. Currently, Keke Topp is injured and will miss the preseason.
