Werder Bremen stops Schimmel-Scham: Stadium Upgrade for ZDF-Fritzy
Werder Bremen has a new gem! Just in time for the start of the Regionalliga season (Fri., 19:00) against Oldenburg, the construction work on site 11 has been completed after almost 16 months. New cabins, new rooms, new gastro for 10 million euros. President Hubertus Hess-Grunewald is proud: „A great building with all aspects of sustainability and functionality without golden water taps. The excuse that the infrastructure is insufficient is no longer there.“ For years, Werder had been ashamed of the mold infestation in the over-50-year-old facilities. Now, the Bremen U23 and the Werder Women, trained by Fritzy Kromp (41), have a beautiful new home.

Before that, Werder had been arguing with residents for ten years over the content and volume of the renovation in the Pauliner Marsch. Only under the new managing director Tarek Brauer (48) did things move forward. Brauer: „The expectations have been exceeded. We have shown that we can implement complex construction projects in the time and cost plan.“ Important: Because the site is located in a flood-prone area, the entire building and technical equipment has been relocated upwards. The sockets in the rooms are at least 1.30 m high. Hess-Grunewald: „When the water comes, you open the doors, wade through, and then it can continue.“ Curious: From bright green to mouse gray – in the cabin, the U23 coaches Cedric Makiadi or the women's coach Kromp can change the lighting color according to their mood or needs. Half of the renovation costs (5 million euros) will be taken over by the professional department. The sports club „Werder“ pays 2.5 million, the city of Bremen also. In addition, there are 9 million euros for the construction of the training grounds, which are borne by the professional department and the club in equal parts. In the summer of 2027, the Werder Campus will be completed for 13 million euros. Werder Bremen currently occupies 15th place in the Bundesliga table (32 points, 8 wins, 8 draws, 18 losses) and is 57 points behind the league leaders Bayern Munich. The Bremen U23 will face SC Paderborn 07 at home on October 17, 2026. In this season, the Bremers have scored 37 goals and conceded 60 (-23 goal difference).
