Werder Bremen have written Bundesliga history with a historic comeback triple. The Green-Whites are the first team in over 63 years of the league to come back from 0:2 down in three consecutive matches, driven by the outstanding form of Niclas Füllkrug.

The 33-year-old striker scored six times in the last five games and was the key player in these spectacular fightbacks. The latest chapter of this series was written last Saturday in a sold-out Weserstadion, which had just celebrated its 100th birthday. Against SC Paderborn, Werder were 0:2 down at half-time after a double strike from Stefano Marino and Steffen Tigges.

Werder turned up the heat again in the second half. In the 59th minute, Füllkrug reduced the deficit following an assist from Eren Dinkci. Just six minutes later, in the 65th minute, the captain converted a penalty to make it 2:2. This repeated the pattern of the two previous away games in London and Milan, where Werder also fell 0:2 behind and managed to draw 2:2 each time.

Head coach Daniel Thioune is full of praise for his goalscorer. "Niclas has been doing this outstandingly for weeks," the coach said. Defender Amos Pieper also struggled to find words for his teammate's performance after the match: "What he has ignited here is currently beyond words."

The historic feat is also reflected in the current standings. Werder Bremen are in eighth place in the Bundesliga table with nine points from six matchdays. The record shows two wins, three draws and one defeat with a goal difference of 12:12. This puts the team just five points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Füllkrug, with his six season goals in six appearances, is the clear top scorer for the side. His goals were decisive for the points against Borussia Dortmund, 1. FC Köln, FC Augsburg and now Paderborn. The team's recent form, showing one win, three draws and one loss in the last five league games, indicates solid progress.

The next challenge for the comeback kings is the away match at FSV Mainz 05 this coming Saturday. Mainz currently sit in fifth place, promising a tough duel. Werder will once again rely on the leadership qualities of Niclas Füllkrug to continue the positive run.
