Werder Bremen loanees Samuel Mbangula and Patrice Čović have made significant impacts at their temporary clubs, earning praise from head coach Daniel Thioune.
Mbangula, 22, scored a hat-trick for FC Bologna in their 4-2 Serie A victory over AC Milan. It was the forward's first professional treble. "My first hat-trick, but hopefully not my last," said the player, who had not scored since November 2025 when he found the net for Werder against VfL Wolfsburg. Mbangula is on loan at Bologna until the end of the season, with the Italian club holding a reported €12.5 million purchase option. His contract with Werder runs until 2030.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Patrice Čović scored for Dynamo Dresden in their 2-0 win against FC Schalke 04 in the 2. Bundesliga, gaining key first-team experience.
What it means for Werder
Werder boss Daniel Thioune was not shocked by the performances. "I am not surprised, because the potential has always been known to us," Thioune said. The club is closely monitoring the players' progress as they could return to strengthen the squad or generate a transfer fee in the future.
Werder themselves currently sit sixth in the Bundesliga table with 12 points from seven games, having recorded three wins and three draws. Their recent form shows one win, two draws, and two losses from their last five matches. The team has scored 15 goals and conceded 14 this season. Thioune's side hosts 10th-placed TSG 1899 Hoffenheim at the Weserstadion this Saturday, October 31st. The last meeting between the two sides ended in a 2-0 home defeat for Bremen back in January. In this context, any positive news from around the club is welcome, even if it originates elsewhere.
The strong showings from Mbangula and Čović come as Werder seeks consistency in the league following a 3-2 defeat at Borussia Dortmund last weekend. That result came after a 3-2 away win at Mainz and a 2-2 draw with Paderborn. The team does possess a reliable goalscorer in Niclas Füllkrug, who has eight goals this season. Werder are five points behind the league leaders. Nurturing talent out on loan remains a key part of the club's long-term planning.
