After becoming Vice-European Champion with the German U19 national team in a successful pre-season, Mick Schmetgens now faces the decision: Will he stay at Werder Bremen or go on loan? The defensive talent of 18 years has regularly trained and made his Bundesliga debut recently. However, the situation is not as simple as it seems: Niklas Stark and Karim Coulibaly, who also moved up to the professional squad in the previous season, currently stand above him in the hierarchy. Moreover, questions arise about whether Coulibaly and Malatini will be sold this summer.
Schmetgens' Training Performance
"Mick is doing a great job at the moment, he has also worked intensively during the training camp", praises Clemens Fritz, Werder Bremen's football director. "We have no stress about this situation." However, the situation is not as straightforward: The Regionalliga, where Werder's U23 team could play regularly, might be too low for a talent of Schmetgens' caliber. The new DFL U21 league offers an attractive alternative, but there will only be sporadic games in the coming months. A loan is therefore still not out of the question.
The situation will likely become clearer when more time passes and Schmetgens can demonstrate his performance during Werder's preparation period. Although there is interest in him, nothing has been confirmed yet that the club would consider as meaningful.
