Werder Bremen loses a familiar name: Yann‑Benjamin Kugel, former fitness coach, has signed with FC Barcelona. The 46‑year‑old, who helped Germany win the 2014 World Cup, moves to the Spanish giants.
How did the move happen?
Kugel was part of Thomas Schaaf’s staff at Werder from 2008 to 2012, overseeing the fitness of players like Claudio Pizarro and Per Mertesacker. After leaving Werder he worked for Red Bull Salzburg, 1. FC Cologne, PSV Eindhoven and Benfica Lisbon. A direct link to Hansi Flick, whom he knew from their DFB days, opened the Barcelona door.
Why does this matter for Werder?
The club is in a tough spot: 15th in the Bundesliga, 32 points from 34 games, recent form LLLDW and a –23 goal difference (37 scored, 60 conceded). Losing Kugel means Werder not only parts with an experienced trainer but also a key health liaison. Without his know‑how the injury risk could rise, especially as the team sits 57 points behind Bayern Munich.
What does Barcelona expect?
Hansi Flick, now head coach at Barcelona, wants Kugel to sharpen the physical preparation of Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and others. The previous fitness coach Julio Tous was reassigned after several players reportedly expressed dissatisfaction, according to Spanish media. Kugel’s task is to cut injury risk and keep the squad ready for league and Champions League battles.
What’s next for Werder?
After Kugel’s departure Werder must quickly find a replacement to maintain training standards. The current season leaves little margin for error, as the team fights to stay up. A new fitness coach could inject fresh ideas, but the search will be hard given limited resources and the poor table position.
Kugel’s move highlights the strong network between German and international top clubs. For Werder the question remains whether they can fill the coaching gap before the next injury wave further weakens the side.
